Named after Buddy Threadgoode Jr., who was named after Igie’s deceased brother, and is often referred to as Stump. The raising of Buddy is a focal point of the novel.

Named after Smokey Phillips.
In the book, Smokey Phillips - also known as Smokey Lonesome - represents the homeless, unemployed and wandering population of the 1920s and 1930s.
